LG begins its rollout of a 3D app converter for the Optimus 3D smartphone
LG will begin rolling out its 3D game and app converter software to Optimus 3D handsets in Europe from the beginning of this month, with a global rollout following shortly afterwards.
The converter uses some clever coding to display 2D apps and games in glasses-less 3D on the LG Optimus 3D, but only works in landscape mode and for Open GL based apps. This isn't a problem though really as most apps do use Open GL and if you're playing games many of them are better in landscape orientation anyway.
Using the software you’ll be able to switch between 2D and 3D on the fly. It’s good news for Optimus 3D owners, 3D apps have been pretty hard to come by since glasses-free 3D launched earlier this year, despite the emergence of a competing handset from HTC with the Evo 3D.
LG will also soon be releasing another update for the Optimus 3D which will add a 3D video editor, 2D video stabilisation and a mode to view your recorded 3D videos in 2D.
You can check to see if your Optimus 3D can already get the update by going into the Settings menu and selecting the ‘check for updates’ option.
We reviewed the LG Optimus 3D a few months ago, giving it 3.5 stars out of five. We found it to be an impressive and high-end smartphone all round and the 3D capabilities are an added bonus. The battery doesn’t hold a charge that well though.
