In the absence of any actual handset launches from RIM, we'll have to make do with yet another BlackBerry 10 rumour – this time in the form of pictures of the BlackBerry London.

The handset renders, which aren't actual product photographs, look nothing like the leaked photos of the London published in early January.

These new images show a long thin handset with a narrow screen looking nothing like your average BlackBerry phone.

Premi...um?

According to the bullet-points joining the images on the leaked RIM slide, "London is about changing the game."

Apparently the game is about to feature hard- and software fused into one polished experience and will morph into a "quality apps and content story" which would be a bit of a change for RIM (zing).

The slide also promises "excpectional" power and efficiency and rich specification – previous rumours peg the BlackBerry London as a 1.5GHz dual-core handset with 16GB of internal storage and 1GB of memory.

Apparently RIM has the UK in mind for the London, with two other handsets in the works for the US (BlackBerry Laguna and BlackBerry Lisbon), although there's still no hint of a UK release date for the BlackBerry 10 handset.

But, if new RIM CEO Thorston Heins has anything to do with it (and you'd hope that he would), BlackBerry 10 handsets will land before the year is out.

Newly instated RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has revealed that despite the company's woes BlackBerry won't be sold and he is not looking to take the easy route out of the current situation - ie, bow down to Google and release BlackBerry-flavoured Android devices.

Speaking to Crackberry, Heins commented on rumours in the media on plans to break up or sell RIM, saying: "my true belief is that RIM has the strength and the assets that we can really succeed in this market".

He notes there is renewed positive energy in RIM's offices and it is proud of its integrated solution of hardware, software, services and network, but admits there will be a lot of change in terms of structure and software.

UK turning back on Blackberry

Challenging the philosophy of other manufactures who build devices to sit on Google's Android operating system, Heins admits that RIM is not following this easy route and instead is doing things the hard way, but believes its the right path for Blackberry and its users.

However this may be too little too late for RIM, in the UK at least, as a BBC Newsbeat investigation suggests almost three quarters of Blackberry users want to change their handsets.

This follows a series of problems Blackberry experienced during 2011 including service outages and handsets which failed to match the standards of competing devices.

Exclusive: Flowd 'honestly happy' to have abandoned BlackBerry plans

If you'd asked the developers at music social network Flowd if they had plans to make a BlackBerry app at the beginning of this year, they would have said yes. Ask now and the plans are on ice, product of a turbulent year for RIM's platform.

Although Flowd currently has apps for iOS, Android and Nokia (that's the companies Finnish roots showing through), it's yet to release software for BlackBerry or Windows Phone.

We asked Wilhelm Taht, Flowd's director of marketing, if a BlackBerry app is in the pipeline and there was no beating about the bush in his response.

BlackBerry crumble

He told us, "BlackBerry has been on our target list throughout the year but I can honestly say we're happy we haven't gone with it.

"Metrics show BlackBerry users aren't going to be BlackBerry users much longer. So, you know, it's a good thing we didn't do it.

"If things suddenly change for BlackBerry we'd reconsider but we took the position to continue to wait and see in the spring."

Although not entirely surprising, it's interesting to see developers and services abandoning ship as early as spring this year.

Slow product release cycles on RIM's part and the PlayBook's lack of success were already taking their toll, even before the bad press of the London riots, takeover talks, internal staff criticism and the disastrous three-day BlackBerry outage later in the year.

Flowd itself is hardly a household name at the moment with the company yet to set the social networking music lover's world alight. Describing itself as a music social network, the app allows you to share music info with friends, check in to gigs, take advantage of exclusive offers and keep up with news from your favourite artists.

The company celebrated its first birthday last week boasting 900 artists using the application, although it wouldn't reveal active user figures.

Jockeying for position

Windows Phone is also on Flowd's radar, but, like many app developers, the company is waiting to see how 2012 shapes up for the fledgling OS.

"Windows Phone is on the wait and see list. Analysts predict growth for the platform next year, but it isn't big enough yet," Taht told us.
