Apple to release iPad 3 in March, iPad 4 following in October

Apple could be preparing to release two new iPads this year. The iPad 3 may be unveiled in March and a secondary tablet, dubbed the iPad 4, could arrive in October, according to Taiwan component makers via DigiTimes.
Update: In addition to the information divulged earlier by DigiTimes, 9to5mac has found references about quad-core processing in iOS 5.1 which is currently in beta. This upcoming OS update from Apple is supposed to be paired with a next-generation iPad 3 and potentially the iPhone 5.
The iPad 3 is expected to ship with a QXGA (2084 x 1536 pixels) display and improved battery life but other than these two enhancements, we are told not to expect much more from the tablet. Previous rumors had pointed to two iPad 3 models, a mid-range and high-end product, being unveiled at iWorld on January 26.
The latest speculation indicates that the iPad 2 will receive a price cut to $399 with the introduction of the iPad 3. The lower price would allow Apple to compete with other vendors such as Sony, Motorola and Samsung that offer tablets at a lower price point.
Sources expect the real battle for market share to take place in the second half of 2012 when Apple ships their iPad 4. This would be around the same time that Microsoft releases Windows 8 and Intel introduces its Clover Trail-W platform. These sources suggest that the iPad 4 would feature the same 9.7-inch display as the iPad 3 but would include upgraded hardware specifications and new applications. This could perhaps include the Samsung-manufactured quad-core A6 processor that has been rumored to be the successor to the dual-core A5 SoC.
DigiTimes has a mixed track record, especially when it comes to Apple rumors. As such, we suggest you take this latest dose with a grain of salt.

Facebook agrees to data changes following Irish audit

Facebook has agreed to make key changes to the data it currently keeps indefinitely about which adverts its non-US users click on.

Because its headquarters are located in Ireland, an audit by the country's data protection commissioner (IDPC) has brought about recommendations and immediate changes from the social network.

"Audit reports are not frequently made public, but in this case, the DPC and Facebook agreed at the outset that - in the interests of transparency - the contents of the audit should be made public, in full, immediately upon completion," blogged Facebook's director of public policy in Europe, Richard Allan.

"We believe this is the best way for users and policymakers around the world to understand how thoroughly the DPC performed its examination and how closely we will be working together in the future," he added.

Interestingly, Facebook's targeted advertising (based on the user's profile) was considered legitimate and the 'real name policy' in which people are not allowed pseudonyms is valid and justified.

The controversial "suggested tagging" system – which stirred up huge controversy – did lead to some criticism from the IDPC: "The introduction of Tag Suggest, a popular tool to make the tagging of large numbers of images quick and easy, could have been done in a more transparent fashion," added Allan.

"Despite these concerns, the DPC did not find that the launch of Tag Suggest breached Irish data protection law, and confirmed that the function used to delete the user's facial profile is invoked when the user disables "tag suggestions."

"The DPC recommended we take a 'best practice' approach in this area and display additional notifications to users in Europe, to help them learn more about the feature."

Among the other key commitments from Facebook are:

• Offer additional notifications to European users about Facebook's photo Tag Suggest feature so that they can decide whether or not to use this feature to help people tag them in photos

• Change a number of our policies related to retention and deletion of data including how data is logged when people access websites with social plugins to minimise the amount of information collected about people who are not logged in to Facebook

• Work with the DPC to improve the information that people using Facebook are given about how to control their information both on Facebook and when using applications.

"We work on a daily basis with regulators around the world, and we appreciate the investment of time and effort by the DPC and its leadership to improve the experience of Facebook users," concluded Allan.

"We have benefited from the open, honest and cooperative relationship and look forward to continue working together."

Sky quietly blocks Newzbin2 following court order

Sky has revealed that it blocked access to Newzbin2 earlier this week after receiving a court order.

The block came into effect on 13 December, with Sky adding that it will continue to take action to block sites when required by court.

"Moving forward, as and when clear and legally robust evidence of copyright theft is presented, we will take appropriate action in respect to site blocking, which will include complying with court orders," the company stated.

Piratical

Sky, of course, has more vested interest in moving to reduce piracy and "help content companies protect their copyright" online than other ISPs, given its fingers are stuck in pies like movie and television content production.

After BT was ordered to block Newzbin2 because it provides links to pirated music and films, the Motion Picture Association asked Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media to follow suit – all said they would follow official court orders.

We asked TalkTalk and Virgin Media if they had received orders from the court requiring them to block the site too.

"Virgin Media has not had a court order either and our position remains since the last ruling," a spokesperson for Branson's brand told us.

"The recent Newzbin2 ruling clarifies the legal process for content owners to challenge alleged copyright infringement. As a responsible ISP, we will comply with any court order addressed to us but strongly believe such deterrents need to be accompanied by compelling legal alternatives, such as our agreement with Spotify, which give consumers access to content at the right price."

Update: TalkTalk sent TechRadar the following statement, "We are not in principle against blocking provided a court decides. We have received no such order in respect of Newzbin."

Website blocking is very much the soup du jour among rights holders, despite widespread blocking plans being branded 'unworkable' by UK business secretary Vince Cable earlier this year.
