Philips 7000 Series tops smart TV line-up

Philips has just revealed its latest line-up of smart TVs, with the top of the crop being the Philips 7000 Series.

The company has decided to go a little smart TV crazy with its latest batch of televisions, with the technology embedded in televisions as small as 19 inches.

There's just one part of the range which hasn't been given internet connectivity and that is the budget-conscious Philips 3000 Series.

The Philips 7000 series boasts active shutter 3D, 20W speakers, the inclusion of five HDMI slots, three USB ports and both Wi-Fi and Ethernet. As with Philips televisions of yore, two-sided Ambilight is also included.

When it comes to sizes, the 7000 Series is available in 40, 46 and 55-inch sizes.

Smart TV line-up

Below this is the Philips 6000 series. This range begins at 32 inches (there's also 37, 42, 47 and 55-inches available).

Although there is smart TV functionality on board, the speaker size has been reduced to 12W, you get four HDMI inputs instead of five, the standard three USBs, and there is 3D but this comes in a passive flavour.

The mid-range of smart TVs is the Philips 4000 range. There's no 3D on board but you do get four HDMIs, three USBs and the obligatory Wi-Fi. Sizes range from: 32, 37, 42 and 47 inches.

The Philips 3500 range is the final series of smart TVs – including DLNA streaming and YouTube support.

Wi-Fi comes in the form of an optional USB Wi-Fi adaptor and depending on the size of television you want (sizes start and 19 inches and end at 42 inches) there's both 720p and 1080p panels.

Not-so smart

For those who hate 3D and laugh at the thought of connecting your television up to the internet, the Philips 3000 Series is for you.

Sizes go from 19 to 42 inches and you get three HDMI ports and one USB slot, but there's no smart TV functionality on board and not even a whiff of 3D.

The Philips 7000 Series UK release date – as with the rest of the range – is Q2. Pricing is to be announced.

Review: Withings Smart Baby Monitor

Did you know you can use your iPhone or iPad as a baby monitor? Neither did we until we came across the Withings Smart Baby Monitor.

It connects over Wi-Fi, and via the free app, streams video of your little one from anywhere you can get an internet connection – even over 3G.

The app doesn't just stream video though. It tells you all sorts of other things, such as the humidity, temperature and noise levels in the baby's room. And you can get it to issue alerts for all these different readings.

The camera can take a picture, and you can play a lullaby or speak to your child to soothe them back to sleep with the sound of your voice. The 3-megapixel camera also has an essential night-vision mode.

The setup procedure was refreshingly easy and we were soon up and running. The picture quality isn't particularly high, but it was good enough for its intended purpose, and the night vision worked well.

We also really liked the ability to talk through the unit from our iPhone. The app keeps the audio going in the background, so you can keep listening even when you're using your email client or browsing the web.

But the main problem is that if you start playing with more demanding apps on your iOS device you can interrupt the stream coming from the camera, and a restart of the app is required. You could use the Withings unit as a security camera to keep an eye on your home while you're away, but there are cheaper options available if that's all you need.

UK public the most savvy online but Smart TVs a turn off

The UK is filled with tech-savvy individuals who find getting online a doddle, according to new report by Ofcom, but another study reveals that Brits aren't that enamoured with Smart TVs.

The Ofcom study found that the UK is "leading the way" in using the internet, citing the fact that 79 per cent of people with internet access managed to order goods online, while the British were the most likely to visit retail websites online, with 89 per cent claiming to have done this in the past year.

And the UK's passion for the web isn't just computer-based, smartphones are also a web browsing device of choice with nearly half (46 per cent) of people with internet access using their phones to go online in October – more than any other country.

Not so smart

When it comes to loving the web through televisions, however, the results are nothing to celebrate about.

While one in 10 Brits own a Smart TV, according to YouGov, this is set to rise by just 4 per cent in 2012 – with the survey predicting a slowdown of sales.

The reasons for consumers not wanting a television that is web enabled is apparently to do with the sheer amount of devices around at the moment that offer this functionality – including games consoles.

And when it comes to Smart TVs, YouGov's study shows that they are still seen as too expensive for purchase, with 28 per cent of the 2023 people surveyed saying they won't purchase one at the price they are in the shops but may consider it if some sort of payment scheme was put into place.

Intel ditches smart TV division

Chip giant Intel is to drop out of the smart TV market due to a lack of demand for internet-enabled flatscreens.

The company will fold its TV-based Digital Home Group, and move the engineers onto tablet, smartphone and Ultrabook development.

Intel's Atom CE4100 chip currently powers D-Link's Boxee Box and Logitech's Revue digital media players, as well as Sony's Google-powered televisions. But it's set to be the last chip of its kind, with competitor ARM likely to fill the void Intel leaves.

"This is a business decision where we're taking those resources and applying them to corporate priorities," Claudine Mangano, an Intel official, told Bloomberg.

TV Go Home

Those priorities look increasingly like tablets and smartphones, where the Digital Home Group's knowledge could be harnessed to create portable devices with smart TV functionality.

The CE4100 will continue to be sold and supported by Intel, and it will also remain - albeit more anonymously - in set top boxes.

By all rights Google TV should have followed in the lucrative footsteps of Android, but we were less than impressed when we reviewed it.

Although there's still potential in the smart TV format, the massive popularity of tablets makes it seem like Intel is doing the right thing.
