Windows XP still most used OS

Can Windows 7 overtake XP before Windows 8 arrives?Operating systems News By Chris Smith 14 hours ago | Tell us what you think [ 3 comments ]

Tweet windows-xp-still-most-used-os Windows XP is still comfortably more popular than Windows 7

Microsoft's Windows XP is still comfortably the most popular operating system after gaining a larger share of the market in January, new stats have shown.

Despite Redwood's best efforts to convert users to Windows 7, the decade-old XP OS still had 47.19 per cent of all PC and Mac users in January, up from 46.5 per cent in December.

Windows 7, which had sold over 400 million licenses as of last summer making it the fastest-selling operating system ever, has 36.4 per cent of the market, according to figures from NetApplications.

With the next generation Windows 8 OS set to go public this year, it seems unlikely that Windows 7 will be able to overhaul XP before that transition takes place.

No support for XP beyond 2014

Microsoft is still attempting to convince businesses and home users to upgrade to Windows 7 before Windows 8 arrives, with the company dropping support for XP in just two years time.

Over 8 per cent of personal computer users are still on Windows Vista and, as bad as Vista proved to be, it still has a bigger market share than Apple's Mac OS X.

The Macintosh software has 6.39 per cent of all users, which is actually up an entire percentage point from one year ago.

3. Simple reason to XP still being alive...pretty much every business I know runs a 6-8year old lot of computers with XP. Reason for business to not upgrade? simple, they don't need anything but access to the internet and office package. Plus the fact that a lot of companies aren't making enough in these last few hard years to think "yeh lets give microsoft a heap of money to get their latest OS".

Fact is if they want people to upgrade they seriously need to drop the prices on the OS. I for one really want w7 64bit as my comp only came with 32bit. Only way to get 64bit is to pay £120plus....screw that

2. Correction where does the 6.39% come from? I see it's Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.7 being included which totals 5.13%.

Mac OS X 10.5 should still be included if it's to be fair.

1. I'm wondering how XP has managed to grow, even slightly.

The Mac OS X stat looks to be based on 10.7 Lion. How is it accurate to only include 1 Mac version but 3 Windows versions?

I'd be interested to see the total number of Mac OS X users including 10.5 and 10.6.

Software will eventually kill XP for good. Here's hoping Office 15 will be Vista upwards. It was probably a mistake for Office 2010 to support XP.

Many PCs croak on well past their sell by date but croak on they do and that means many won't upgrade.
