iPad 3 to land in '3-4 months'

Rumours of an early 2012 launch for the iPad 3 are hotting up, as suppliers claim to have begun shipping parts and components for the next generation iPad.

The word comes from Digitimes, of course, the site that's plugged in to the Asian supply chain like nobody's business.

Foxconn, Apple's major manufacturing partner, is also said to be starting production on the iPad 3 in January with the serious quantities ramping up in February and expected to meet the heady heights of 9.5 to 9.8 million units over the course of Q1 2012.

Bye bye iPad 2

Digitimes also reckons that manufacturers are also reducing components made for the iPad 2, which would indicate that a new slate is on its way.

However, iPad 2 production rates will stay at around 14 to 15 million units for the final quarter of this year, dropping to four or five million in Q1 2012.

The new information fits rather nicely with the last iPad 3 rumour we reported on that pegs the iPad 3 release date as February 2012.

Two rumours don't make a fact, but a Q1 release fits with the past iPad releases (January and March) so we'll tentatively brand the three to four month timescale as 'quite likely':

Rumourometer

The next iPad is rumoured to feature everything from double the resolution to quadruple the resolution to slimmer than to thicker than the current iPad 2.
