Nokia to focus on budget handsets

New feature phone OS and cheap Windows Phone devicesMobile phones News By John McCann Friday at 11:52 UTC | Tell us what you think [ 1 comments ]

Tweet nokia-s-new-meltemi-mobile-os Nokia going cheap and cheerful

Nokia is reportedly working on a new Linux-based operating system called Meltemi for its popular feature phones.

Smartphones may be all the rage in parts of the world such as Europe and the US, but feature phones still account for two thirds of global mobile sales and Nokia is the biggest manufacturer out there.

Nokia's more basic feature phones currently run its own Series 40 OS and there are now more than 1.5 billion Nokia handsets running this software worldwide.

Stop, hammer-temi

Industry sources have told Reuters that Nokia is working on a replacement for the Series 40 operating system, code-named Meltemi.

Meltemi will be built on a Linux-based software platform and is focussed on arriving on the more advanced feature phones, potentially bridging the gap between feature and smartphones.

Not so smart

Nokia stills lags behind in the smartphone arena and after dumping its own Symbian and MeeGo smartphone operating systems the Finnish firm has stuck its eggs firmly in the Windows Phone basket.

Nokia wants to take on the low-end smartphone market in 2012 stating: "We plan to introduce and bring to markets new and more affordable Nokia products with Windows Phone in 2012, such as the Nokia Lumia 610."

Could Nokia be onto a winner as it looks to strengthen its lucrative feature phone dominance with the new Meltemi software, while re-focussing its efforts on its smartphone range with an aim of nailing the budget end of the market?

Let us know if you think Nokia can turn it around, in the comment box below.

Nokia Lumia 800 battery issue fix imminent

Update will bring a number of improvementsMobile phones News By John McCann 13 hours ago | Tell us what you think [ 0 comments ]

Tweet nokia-lumia-800-battery-issue-fix-imminent Better late than never Nokia

For all you long suffering Nokia Lumia 800 owners out there, the end of the fast drain battery issue could be in sight, along with fixes for a number of other bugs as well.

The Lumia 800 was Nokia's first handset to sport the Windows Phone operating system after its huge deal with Microsoft. It certainly isn't a bad phone, as our Nokia Lumia 800 review found, but users have reported a number of bugs since its launch – with a lot focussing around the poor battery life.

MobileTechWorld has revealed that it's been testing the latest firmware upgrade for the Lumia 800, which addresses a number of issues including the fast battery drain.

But wait, there's more

Other creases which the update irons out include the lack of audio bass, auto-white balance issues with the camera app, hardware button backlight brightness and an improved diagnostics app.

The report suggests the new firmware provides even more fixes on top of the ones we've already listed, but did not disclose what the rest may be.

There is no hint as to when the firmware will be pushed out to consumers, so Lumia 800 owners hold tight and keep checking TechRadar for the latest.
