Samsung and Google postpone Nexus Prime event

Samsung's 'Unpacked' Google Nexus Prime event has been delayed, with speculation it's out of respect for Steve Jobs

Next week’s Samsung ‘Unpacked’ event at the CTIA Fall is to be postponed according to a statement from Samsung:

‘Samsung and Google decided to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.’

Reasons for the delay haven’t been revealed but it was expected that the much-anticipated Google Nexus Prime would be unveiled at the event.

There’s been a multitude of leaks, rumours and speculation in the run-up to the launch including spec lists, images and most recently video footage showing the device running Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

It’s possible there have been too many leaks for Samsung’s tastes, but we don’t think this is likely.

A more plausible explanation would be the recent death of Steve Jobs, the iconic head of rival company Apple.

That statement, saying that it is ‘just not the right time to announce a new product,’ suggests as much to us.

A desire to not launch a rival product around the time when Jobs’ funeral is expected to go ahead would be a prudent move for the South Korean manufacturer and, to be fair, it is also likely a genuine display of respect from the companies involved.

Lastly, it could be that, in addition, Samsung and Google are re-jigging their presentations for the event to be a little less competitive or perhaps even less abrasive towards their rivals in the wake of Jobs’ death.

Normally product-based bragging and machismo is par for the course but we’re sure all would agree now is not the time for one-upmanship and posturing.
